Abstract: The deceleration motor for the SARA orbital platform, designed by the hybrid propulsion laboratory of the University of Brasilia, must undergo static tests on experimental test benches in order to verify its operation. As the tests were carried out, it was observed that the engine nozzle suffers with recession of the surface, especially in the part of the throat, where the phenomenon is more visible. This phenomenon is known as ablation, has a negative effect on hybrid rocket engines, and becomes a factor that hinders the advancement of hybrid propulsion as it affects engine performance. Another phenomenon that is present during engine tests is the presence of shock waves inside the nozzle, which also affect the performance as well causes damages in the material of the nozzle, because the shock wave causes thermal stresses at the point where it occurs. Therefore, this work has the objective to study the flow inside the nozzle, in face of these phenomena that occur during the soil tests. For this, simulations were performed to obtain the complete description of the flow in the nozzle with shock waves and a method was established to predict erosion in the nozzle material. The heterogeneous reaction between the surface solid carbon and the oxidant species contained in the gas resulting from the combustion, such as H2O, CO2, OH, O and O2, is the main cause of erosion. These reactions consume the solid carbon and oxidize it in COg. The results obtained using the thermochemical erosion model are compared with the experimental results obtained by analyzing the motor parts used in the tests. It was possible to observe that the results between the experimental observations and the theoretical model are similar with the highest erosion rate occurring in the throat with values close to 0.13mm/s. The oxidizing species that most influence in the final erosion result is H2O, a result that agrees with other studies in this area. In addition, as predicted for this type of operation, with the numerical simulation it was possible to observe the presence of the shock wave inside the divergent part of the nozzle. Experimental tests show that the shock wave causes the nozzle material to fail because of the high temperatures but does not influence the erosion results by the thermochemical model. The change in geometry due to material erosion also causes changes in the flow, in which after 41s of engine operation, the shock wave in the nozzle appears near the throat of the nozzle and the values of pressure and velocity are reduced.
