| Resumo: | A Irmandade Pré-Rafaelita foi um grupo de artistas constituído entre 1848 e 1849 na cidade de Londres, que visava romper com os cânones vigentes da Academia e propor um retorno aos princípios da arte renascentista e medieval “pré-Rafael”, daí o nome do grupo. Entre os princípios de composição propagados pelo grupo destacam-se os temas religiosos, morais e literários, o tratamento brilhante da cor, além da valorização da natureza como elemento de conexão com o Divino. Embora se tratasse de um grupo essencialmente constituído por homens, o movimento pré-rafaelita influenciou talentosas mulheres artistas até virada do século. Uma dessas artistas é Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, que se destaca na pintura à óleo e na ilustração. Um de seus trabalhos ilustrativos mais importante é o conjunto de ilustrações para a obra literária Idylls of the King, de Alfred Tennyson. Essa monografia visa, além de apresentar a Irmandade Pré-Rafaelita e as artistas que se inspiraram no movimento, analisar a representação de personagens femininas nas ilustrações de Idylls of the King de Eleanor Brickdale. |
| Abstract: | The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of artists established at London between 1848 and 1849, which intended to break with the existing canons of the Academy and propose a return to the principles of pre-Raphael's Renaissance and medieval art, what originated the group’s name. Among the principles of composition spreaded by the group stand out the religious, moral and literary themes, the shiny treatment of colors, as well as the appreciation of nature as an element of connection with the Divine. Although it was of a group consisted essentially of male artists, the Pre-Raphaelite movement also influenced talented women artists until the turn of the century. Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale is one of these artists, who stands out in oil painting and illustration. One of her most important illustrative works is the set of illustrations for the narrative poems of Idylls of the King, by Alfred Tennyson. The study presented here aims not only to introduce the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the female artists who were inspired by the movement, but also to analyze the representation of female characters in Eleanor Brickdale's illustrations of “Idylls of the King”. |
