_____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Introduction: Throughout the world, aging process in the population is happening quickly and decisively. Therefore, anatomical and physiological changes are inevitable and obvious in the body of an aging person, which causes impairment of functionality and performance in daily tasks. This increases the risk of vulnerability and dependence in elderly, which in consequence decreases the well-being and the quality of life of them. Objective: to describe the clinical-functional profile and to analyze the relationship between the physical-functional components and the capacity to perform Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) by community-dwelling elderly that attend an event of health promotion. Materials and methods: For this research, the sample consisted of 68 elderly (n= 68) were used a form social-demographical and clinical information, a Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale by Lawton & Brody, the physical tests Timed Up and Go (TUG), the Alternate-step test, the handgrip strength test (HGS) and the sitting-rising test, all of them to measure and to evaluate the performance of the participants. The significance level of 5% (p = 0.05) was considered in the study. Results: The sample consisted mostly by female (77.9%), married (41.2%), non-alcoholic, non-smokers and physically active (69.1%). However, when BMI was measured, 50.0 % of participants were classified as being in pre-obesity. It was found in the functional evaluations a statistically significant difference only in the higher HGS of male (34.12 Kgf) compared to female (21.20 Kgf), a low positive correlation between HAQ evaluation with TUG test, HGS and alternate-step; and a moderate correlation with the sitting-rising test. In the Lawton & Brody evaluation, participants showed low levels of negative correlation with the physical test, which can mean that the correlation did not significantly, influenced the performance on Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Conclusions: the elderly participants in the study showed a satisfactory performance in the evaluation and physical test, especially in the execution of ADL.
